Genova, Burns & Giantomasi Welcomes New Attorneys
NEWARK, NJ (July 30, 2010) - Genova, Burns & Giantomasi is pleased to welcome the addition of four new Attorneys to the firm: Matthew I. Kupferberg, Esq., Akinyemi T. Akiwowo, Esq., Harris S. Freier, Esq. and John Suwatson, Esq.
Matthew I. Kupferberg joins the firm as Counsel in the Health & Hospital Law Practice Group. He specializes in the representation of various types of healthcare providers in corporate, transactional, regulatory and licensure matters. Mr. Kupferberg structures and negotiates mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, affiliations and employment and consulting arrangements in both general corporate and transactional work. He represents and advises clients in Certificate of Need, facility and professional licensing, HIPAA, fraud and abuse issues (including Anti-Kickback, "Stark" self-referral laws and False Claims), corporate practice of medicine, and corporate compliance. Mr. Kupferberg also assists clients with compliance audits, and the development and implementation of compliance programs, and has advised clients on peer review matters, practitioner credentialing, medical staff bylaws, EMTALA (the federal law prohibiting "patient-dumping"), governing body bylaws, medical records and consent and confidentiality. He is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association. Mr. Kupferberg joins the firm from a national Pharmacy Benefits Manager, where he was a Senior Attorney. Akinyemi T. Akiwowo, a 2005 graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law where he served as Student Bar Association President, will practice Complex Commercial Litigation and White Collar Criminal Defense, Corporate Internal Investigations & Corporate Ethics with the firm. Mr. Akiwowo was formerly associated with Coughlin Duffy, LLP. After law school, Mr. Akiwowo served nearly 2 years as an Assistant Union County Prosecutor. Mr. Akiwowo is a member of the Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and the Federal Bar Association. He presently serves on the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on the Rules of Evidence as well as the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Jury Selection in Criminal and Civil trials. Mr. Akiwowo currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Garden State Bar Association. Additionally, Mr. Akiwowo serves as an advisory board member of the New Jersey Law and Education Empowerment Project ("NJ LEEP"), as well as on the Seton Hall University School of Law Dean's Diversity Council. Earlier this year Mr. Akiwowo was recognized in New Jersey Monthly Magazine by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in Business and Commercial Litigation. Harris S. Freier joins the firm from Proskauer Rose, LLP. A 2006 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Cornell Law School, Mr. Freier will practice in the Employment Law & Litigation Practice Group in the firm's Newark office. While at Cornell Law School, Mr. Freier received several honors, including Order of the Coif, and served as Articles Editor of the Cornell International Law Journal. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia with Distinction in 2003. Mr. Freier is a member of the New Jersey and New York State Bar Associations. John Suwatson joins the firm as a 2008 Cum Laude graduate of Fordham University School of Law, where he was a member of the Fordham Law Review.
