Lincoln National (NYSE:LNC) offers insurance, wealth protection and retirement income products and solutions. It also provides employer-sponsored annuities, mutual fund-based programs and group non-medical insurance products. The company was founded in 1904 and is headquartered in Radnor, Pennsylvania. The company is scheduled to report its fourth quarter earnings on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.

Expectations: The Wall Street consensus is that the company will report $1 per share, up 22% from a year ago when Lincoln National reported earnings of 82 cents per share. Over the past three months, the consensus estimate has risen from 91 cents. Analysts are expecting earnings of $4.18 per share for the fiscal year. Revenue is expected to surpass the year-earlier total of $2.66 billion by 4.1%, finishing at $2.77 billion for the quarter. The company is projected to report revenue of $11.07 billion for the fiscal year.

Performance: Revenue dropped year-over-year in the third quarter, interrupting a three-quarter streak of increasing revenue. It fell 2.5% in the third quarter after rising 7.6%in the second quarter, 7.4% in the first quarter and 11% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The profit dip in the third quarter came after three consecutive quarters of rising profit. Profit dropped 41.9% year-over-year in the most recent quarter. Going further back, the figure rose 27.5% in the second quarter, 19.8% in the first quarter and 91.2% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The stock price has risen from $19.20 on November 4, 2011 to $22.12 over the past quarter. November 18, 2011 to November 23, 2011 marked one of Lincoln National's worst periods, as the share price fell $1.81.

Ratings: The majority of analysts (58.8%) rate the stock as a buy. They do not feel as positively about it as they feel about its nearest 10 competitors, which average 67.9% buys. This marks an improvement, as the number of buy ratings has risen slightly over the past three months.
